PM Modi Applauds Indian Para-Athletes’ Historic Performance at World Championships.

In a moment of national pride, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday commended the Indian para-athletics team for their “remarkable achievement” at the recently concluded World Para Athletics Championships in Kobe, Japan. The Indian contingent delivered a historic performance, winning a total of 17 medals, including six gold, five silver, and six bronze, marking their best-ever haul in the competition’s history.

 

With this stellar performance, India secured the sixth spot in the medals tally, a significant leap from their 19th-place finish in the previous edition. This achievement also reflects a dramatic rise from the 34th position seven years ago, showcasing the rapid progress and dedication of Indian para-athletes.

 

Prime Minister Modi expressed his elation and pride in a tweet, stating, “I am delighted by the outstanding performance of our Indian Para-athletes at the World Para Athletics Championship. Rising from 34th to 6th rank in just seven years, they have delivered their best performance yet at the 2024 Championship, securing an impressive 17 medals!” He further lauded the athletes and everyone involved in their preparation, highlighting their “dedication and perseverance” as an inspiration to the world.

Among the gold medal winners were Simran Sharma in the women’s 200m T12, Deepthi Jeevanji in the women’s 400m T20, Sachin Khilari in the men’s shot put F46, Sumit Antil in the men’s javelin F64, Thangavelu Mariyappan in the men’s high jump T63, and Ekta Bhyan in the women’s club throw F51. These exceptional performances contributed significantly to India’s remarkable standing at the championships.

 

This landmark achievement surpassed India’s previous record of 10 medals (3 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze) from the 2023 edition in Paris, underlining the continuous improvement and competitive spirit of Indian para-athletes on the global stage.

Prime Minister Modi’s recognition of the para-athletics team underscores the importance of sports and the recognition of athletes’ efforts, inspiring future generations to strive for excellence and bring laurels to the nation.
